Applying User-Centered Design to Middleware
by
Carol Righi and Adam Clow
Software
design for users has taken great strides forward over the last 20 years.
Designers have come to recognize and appreciate the importance of designing
products to optimize the end-user experience by applying user centered
design (UCD) techniques. However, it has sometimes been assumed that only
a typical end-user experience (such as using a word processor or browsing
a web site) can benefit from UCD. In fact, that is not the case. UCD can
also be successfully applied to the design of middleware. Middleware
products sit between the operating system and the application, and perform
functions such as storing and retrieving data in databases or sending
and receiving messages between applications. Examples of middleware products
include IBM ® DB2 ®Universal Database, Websphere ® MQ,
and Microsoft's SQL Server.
