Software design for users has taken great strides forward over the last 20 years. Designers have come to recognize and appreciate the importance of designing products to optimize the end-user experience by applying user centered design (UCD) techniques. However, it has sometimes been assumed that only a typical end-user experience (such as using a word processor or browsing a web site) can benefit from UCD. In fact, that is not the case. UCD can also be successfully applied to the design of middleware.
