Seminar
1
Leading
edge concepts in usability research, with application to the development
of mission-critical Web-based customer experiences. (1or
2 day intensive)
Why
the seminar? It is becoming increasingly clear to executives who are
responsible for management and development of large-scale Web initiatives
that the creation of highly usable sites is a complex problem. Many world-class
development executives remain confused about where to turn for objective,
reliable information on how to plan and execute customer experience design
programs that properly integrate formal usability research.
In
Software Engineering: A Practitioner's Approach, author Robert
Pressman shows that for every dollar spent to resolve a problem during
design, $10 would be spent on the same problem during development. Costs
expand to $100 or more if the problem has to be solved after release.
These
costs are the tip of the iceberg. When poor usability is modeled across
all customer touch points, such as call-center volume, customer acquisition,
migration, and retention rates, the costs expand to levels that can be
career threatening. Professional usability research dramatically reduces
the probability of cost overruns as a result of poor customer experience
design.
This
seminar addresses the current state of the art in advanced Web site usability
testing as it applies to customer experience design. The following is
a description of what is covered in this seminar.
Topic
1: The new frontier of lab-based and online interactive usability testing.
The field of usability testing is undergoing a major shift in approach
and emphasis. This session covers the latest lab-based and online research
methodologies and technologies of usability testing. It includes an objective
look at the pros and cons of laboratory and online testing systems and
presents the latest research findings. The session explores the recent
trend in Web development projects toward return on investment (ROI) decision-making
and explores how ROI models can be generated and made more reliable through
the application of formal usability-based research data.
Topic
2: Where to begin to plan an effective usability-testing program.
This session focuses on methods for determining what level of usability
research is appropriate for a given problem. The presentation dissects
the complex questions of expertise, lead-time, costs, and resource allocation.
The seminar ends with examples drawn from large and small Web-interface
usability research projects that demonstrate the costs, benefits, and
liabilities of using professional usability testing expertise in large
Web-based projects.
