Seminar
2
Formal,
user-centered design (UCD) process development: benefits, liabilities
and return on investment modeling. (2-day
intensive.)
Why the seminar?
Web development is a complex business, with the most complex part being
defining the process itself. Should you adopt a classical engineering-based
approach such as use-case modeling to define the functional attributes
of your site? Or are there other methods that can increase the probability
that your system will deliver as promised?
New
methods are finding their way into the second generation of Web development
that have proven effective in other fields of software and systems development.
One new thrust is the use of formal user-centered design (UDC) methodology
to aid in the creation of powerful and effective screen-based delivery
systems.
During
the past 5 years, much has been stated and miss-stated about UCD as a
development model. On the one hand, Gen 1 Web consulting firms made UCD
their mantra. The problem was that they did not have a real idea how a
formal UCD process was developed and how to use it in large projects.
As a result, UCD developed a negative reputation. On the other hand, formal
UCD software development methods have proven effective in the creation
of the most advanced military and aerospace systems in operation today.
These same processes have been used in the development the most powerful
securities trading system currently running at the heart of the world
economy. Formal UCD methods are here to stay and can make dramatic contributions
to the success and cost effectiveness of your Web development efforts.
There is a lot more to UCD than any one realized even two years ago.
This
seminar deals with formal UCD methodology. It covers the history and basic
structure of UCD development and includes a comprehensive discussion of
the benefits and risks of using UCD development methods.
This
seminar is designed for development teams groping for a new method and
process model for large-scale Web initiatives. The following is a description
of what is covered in this seminar. Topic
1:
What is UCD and where did it come from? This session traces the development
of UCD from early military systems to its current state as an important
aspect of Gen 2 Web development efforts. It explores the reasons UCD has
been successful in projects where other methods have failed, as well as
reasons UCD has failed in some projects. The session includes extensive
use of subject matter case studies and concludes with a formal presentation
of the UCD development segments.
Topic
2: Details of a formal UCD process model. This session explores each
phase of the UCD process model. It presents the research and development
demands of all phases of formal UCD, including ways to integrate UCD into
on-going development efforts. The session discusses the construction of
ROI models based on formal UCD development methods. It ends with a simplified
e-econometric model for evaluating the effectiveness of UCD within your
organization.
