Seminar 6

Usability science in the design and development of new products and services (Three-day intensive.)

Why the seminar? The usability and human factors engineering performance of your products are essential to corporate profitability. Usability impacts the bottom line in several critical areas, including customer acquisition, retention and migration rates, call center costs, maintenance and support fees, reliability, brand quality, and product liability exposure. In the last five years, formal usability engineering principles and methods have been increasingly finding their way into product development programs at all scales and levels of complexity.

It is now clear to leading product development executives that they must begin to embrace professional usability engineering in the design and development of all new products and services. This seminar presents detailed information on the methods, benefits, and risks of using professional usability engineering research methods in the design of new products and services.

This seminar focuses on design and development of three-dimensional products and related services. The seminar draws on examples from industries, including consumer products, medical systems, transportation, and commercial and industrial equipment. It is for fast-paced development groups seeking a detailed understanding of formal user-centered design (UCD) principles and rigorous usability testing methods. We can combine this seminar with a workshop on a complex product development problem. The following is a description of what is covered in this seminar.

Topic 1 (full day): Ergonomics and biomechanics in usability science. This session explores the anatomical and biomechanical information related to the design of products for seated and standing tasks. It discusses the research literature and the anthropometrics for the civilian population. The session also focuses on the physical differences, based on a review of the international anthropometrics, that are critical in the development of products for global populations.

Topic 2 (full day): The role and application of cognitive ergonomics in usability science. This session focuses on the definition and measurement of skill acquisition in the context of cognitive processes. It discusses how skill acquisition affects the user's ability to interact successfully with the products you create. The session delves into the current theoretical models of human cognition and decision-making, with a focus on how these theories impact on product design. The seminar ends with a discussion of cognitive task analysis, a critical methodology for evaluating the complexity of products and related services.

Topic 3 (full day): Introduction to formal user-centered design methodology. This session deals with user-centered design (UCD) development methodology. It covers the history and development of this important new process model. It looks at how and why UCD has been used to solve complex problems in product and systems development. The session draws heavily on case studies from the faculty, including several major projects currently running at the heart of the world economy. The session also deals with the complex and critical issues of group problem solving, team composition, and decision theory. It ends with a phase-by-phase description of the UCD process model, including a discussion of how to integrate UCD into ongoing development programs.
