Seminar 7

Intensive ergonomic training for employee involvement teams. (3-day intensive.)

Why the seminar? The ergonomic performance of the industrial, commercial, or white-collar workplace has become a critical aspect of reducing insurance fees and Workman's Compensation costs and of improving the productivity of your employees. As corporations expand their reach in the global economy, retention and migration of employees in traditional manufacturing or white-collar job positions is essential to corporate profits. This seminar provides employee involvement teams (EIT) with a comprehensive background in fundamental workplace ergonomics. The information can be used by EITs to improve overall and detailed workplace ergonomic performance and safety. The seminar focuses on three core topic areas: anatomy and biomechanics, workplace physiology, and employee skill acquisition and training.

This seminar builds a broad understanding of the importance and application of workplace ergonomics in the industrial, commercial, and white-collar work environments. The following is a description of what is covered in this seminar.

Topic 1 (full day): Workplace anatomy and biomechanics. This session explores the anatomical and biomechanical information surrounding seated and standing tasks, ranging from work at computer terminals to heavy lifting. It focuses on identifying physical ergonomic problems within the workplace and methods for remedying the problems. The session gives special attention to the use of task analysis tools and videotape analysis as a means of defining and improving workplace ergonomics. The session ends with a discussion of how to identify problems that require the assistance of outside experts or your medical staff.

Topic 2 (full day): Workplace physiology: This session focuses on the physiological implications of the workplace environment, including the effects of heat, humidity, fatigue, and lighting. It deals with the complex issue of piece rate production and how to identify the relationship between piece rate and significant physiological and ergonomic problems in the workplace

Topic 3 (full day): Learning and skill acquisition in the workplace: This session focuses on the definition and measurement of skill acquisition in the workplace. It discusses how skill acquisition affects the worker's ability to learn job functions and move to new jobs as is common in today's setting. The session provides insights into why certain jobs are more complex than others and how workers acquire skills according to different patterns and profiles .
