Seminar 3

Formal issues in econometric modeling for e-com delivery, with a focus on the creation of behavioral simulations and concept testing for customer experience optimization. (2-day intensive.)

Why the seminar? Does anyone in your organization have a clear method for defining and modeling the economic variables of your Web-based delivery system? The answer to this question is almost certainly "no" And you are not alone. It has been exceedingly difficult to develop a relationship between online customer behavior and the underlying econometric variables that drive corporate profit and loss. Yet each year major corporations pour billions of dollars into Web-based product and service delivery systems with the hope that such systems will eventually turn the corner to profitability. And, in fact, some have begun to do so. But many, in fact most, will not turn a profit at any time in the future without developing a comprehensive and rigorous linkage between customer experience design, customer behavior, and underlying econometric cost and profit levers of the core business.

This seminar deals with the complex and difficult topic of linking online consumer behavior to underling business objectives and hard econometric models. The following is a description of what is covered in this seminar.

Topic 1: What are econometric models and what can we learn from their application in traditional delivery channels? This session traces the development of econometric models from early commercial systems to their current role in the most important commercial enterprises of today. It explores how econometric models are defined and developed and looks at why they are useful for solving some problems and wrong for others. The session ends with an overview of the quantifiable economic variables useful in developing such models for e-com delivery, with a focus on which variables are affected by online customer behavior.

Topic 2: Building and testing formal econometric models for Web-based delivery. This session focuses on design and development of two econometric models for Web-based delivery systems. The first model is from the financial services industry and the second is from online retail. The session discusses how these models were built and how they can be used to define and direct the development of online, interactive customer behavior simulations. The session ends with a presentation of a complete front-to-back econometric model of an e-com delivery system. This session is a simulated system optimization exercise using real variables and simulated sites.
