The future
Older Americans represent
the most reluctant segment of the population, in terms of adopting the Internet.
They often worry about security and privacy and are doubtful that the Internet
can bring them any benefits. 74% of those over 50 without access say the
have no interest in going online, while a substantial majority of those
under 30 who are not currently online say they plan to get access. This
suggests that over time, perhaps in a generation, the Internet will be as
popular as the telephone, which is used by 94% of Americans, and the television,
which is used by 98% of Americans (source: Pew Internet and American Life
Project, 2001).
